Considering an outbuilding or garden building ready for this summer? Well if you are, be sure to factor in the cost of electrics to your new building.
The first thing to consider is what the intended purpose of your building will be used for. This will help determine the size of cable needed. I always recommend using armoured cable, connected directly to the fuse board where possible. When this isn’t possible, a nearby socket in the house can be used, providing the usage is kept relatively low. Usually this is backed up by a 13a fuse. If running your supply from overhead then its essential to use a catenary wire. I sometimes come across twin and earth cable suspended by a clothes line, which is just asking for trouble!
It’s always worth making sure that you “future proof” the installation. For example, if you are installing a new supply to a garage, will there be the need for an EV charger in the future? If your building a garden summer house then will you need a data cable for WI-FI? I would always put it in if unsure, its better to have it and not need it than to dig up your garden in the future.
Its worth considering the distance your building is away from the house and weather or not there are any extraneous conductive parts (such as water, gas or oil pipes). This may mean that installing an earth rod is needed as we would be unable to export the PME supply from the house. As a general rule I try to fit earth rods to buildings over 10M away, however a site survey by an Electrician is always the best solution.
Whatever your plans for your new space we hope you enjoy it! I’m always interested to see new buildings being used for specific activities and love spending time in the “man cave”.
